What is General Nursing and Midwifery

GNM is an abbreviation for "General Nursing and Midwifery". What does that mean? This field focuses on the education of potential nurses in general healthcare, nursing, and midwifery. It is meant for nursing students to develop their knowledge of nursing and healthcare so they can branch out at into field at some point.

GNM refer to coursework for nursing students at many universities as well. Once students have advanced their education, they can go into more specific fields of healthcare. These fields include but are not limited to intensive care, dermatology, gynecology, anesthesia, emergency care, pediatrics, and many more areas of healthcare. .

GNM programme is meant to prepare general nurses who can efficiently perform as members of the health team and capable of dealing the competencies in both the hospitals and other such organizations.


  • Minimum and Maximum age for admission will be 17 and 35 years respectively. For ANM/ LHV. There is no age bar.
  • Minimum education:
    • 10+2 class passed or its equivalent preferably with any stream with aggregrate of 45% marks.
    • Those who have cleared 10+2 vocational ANM course (revised after 2001) from the School recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
    • ANM training i.e. 10+1 O years training should also have passed +2 or its equivalent examination.
  • Admission of students shall be once in a year.
  • Students shall be medically fit.

  • Paediatric Nursing

Internship Period

  • Education Methods & Media for teaching in practice of Nursing
  • Introduction to Research
  • Professional Trends & Adjustment
  • Administration and Ward Management
  • Health Economics


The Diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery shall be of three years duration.
